Nicholas Merchant’s career has mirrored his abiding interest in antiques. He has worked for some of the major auction houses in London and in the provinces as well as running his own successful reference book business, devoted to the Decorative and Fine Arts, with which he exhibited in Europe and America.

His particular interest is English 18th century furniture and country houses. However, his interests are broad and he likes to discuss the art and artefacts in their historical context.

Lecturing has taken Nicholas to the United States, South Africa, Europe and all over the United Kingdom, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Since joining the panel of lecturers of the NADFAS (now Arts Society) in 2004 his convivial style has resulted in over 500 lectures all over the world.

Nicholas was for many years chairman of the West Yorkshire Art Fund Committee. The Art Fund raises money to help save our artistic heritage from going abroad. The committee was disbanded in 2019. Nicholas is now President of the Leeds Arts Society, and remains an accredited lecturer to the main society, resulting in talks on many aspects of the Decorative and Fine Arts, both in the UK and abroad.

His company ASPECT EVENTS is responsible for arranging and hosting events and lectures on specialist short breaks for antique collectors for major hotel groups. His cruise-line experience includes HEBRIDEAN, P&O, SAGA and NOBLE-CALEDONIA.

“We enjoyed your lectures not only for their fascinating content but also for your
presence, humour and style in their presentation.”
