Day 1: Arrive independently at Barnsdale Lodge from 15.30 and enjoy afternoon tea in the hotel’s conservatory. This evening there will be a welcome glass of prosecco, private dinner with wine and an introductory talk by Nicholas Merchant: ‘More Houses of Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire’.
Day 2: First to Southwick Hall for a guided tour of this charming and idiosyncratic village house, a family home for 700 years, then on to Elton Hall, home of the Proby family, packed with important treasures and a superb library. Evening talk from Nicholas Merchant: ‘A French Palace in the English Countryside’ followed by dinner at the hotel.
Day 3: A guided tour of Apethorpe Palace, a 16th century house of unparalleled importance, both historically as a royal home (to James I principally) and architecturally, which has been dramatically saved from dereliction by the intervention of English Heritage and its sale to a French count. Lunch and afternoon visit to Boughton House, the great 18th century Versailles-inspired mansion of the Dukes of Buccleuch. Final visit to Warkton Church with its fabulous funerary sculptures. Dinner at the hotel.
Day 4: Our first visit is to Belton House, a splendid example of Carolean architecture with a fine collection of silver. Lunch at the Angel and Royal pub in Grantham (included) before visiting St Wulframs Church, renowned for its spire and Trigge Library before heading to Woolsthorpe Manor, the family home of Sir Isaac Newton. Return to the hotel for approximately 17.30.
Please note: On some departures certain houses may be replaced as opening times for 2017 are not yet confirmed. Further details will be published on the website when opening hours have been confirmed from the venues.
